I, O, and Q are not used. Alaska adopted slashed-zero (Ø) on standard plates in 2023 to prevent confusion with the letter O.
Historical Plates Still Valid
Earlier 'Last Frontier' (1981–2004), 'Gold Rush Centennial' (1997–2004), 'Celebrating Statehood 1959–2009' (2008–2009), and 'Alaska Artistic License' northern lights plate (2018–2024) all remain valid. The current base is printed using North Carolina's flat-plate dyes since 2023.
Notable Facts
Since 2022, Alaska law issues only one license plate per vehicle, making it a single-plate state. Earlier registrations had two plates.
