How to Install a License Plate Frame in 60 Seconds (Step-by-Step)

License plate frame installation is the easiest car upgrade you'll ever do — under 60 seconds with one tool. But there are a few things people get wrong. Here's the right way, plus tips for getting sticker visibility right and avoiding common mistakes.

Tools you need

One Phillips screwdriver (or a 5/16 socket if your car uses hex bolts). That's it. The two screws holding your existing license plate are the same screws you'll use for the new frame. No drilling, no adhesive, no zip-ties.

Step 1: Remove your existing plate

Use the screwdriver to remove the two mounting bolts on your existing license plate. Set the bolts aside — you'll need them. The plate may be slightly stuck due to dirt or rust; gently wiggle it free.

Step 2: Position the atroq frame

Place the atroq frame over your license plate. Align the mounting holes — atroq uses the U.S. standard 7-inch hole spacing, the same as your plate. The frame should sit flat against the plate with no gap.

Step 3: Reattach with the original bolts

Insert the original mounting bolts through the frame and the plate, into the vehicle's mounting points. Hand-tighten first, then use the screwdriver for final tightness. Don't overtighten — you can crack the frame or strip the plate. Snug, not gorilla-grip.

Step 4: Verify visibility

Step back and check: (1) the alphanumeric serial is fully visible. (2) the state name is fully visible. (3) the renewal sticker (if your state uses plate-mounted stickers) is in the frame's recessed window, fully visible. atroq's design includes recessed sticker windows for states that use plate stickers (most states except CT, NJ, PA, DC which use windshield stickers).

Common mistakes to avoid

Frame too thick: a frame that obscures part of the plate is illegal in many states. atroq's standard frame is 4mm thick (well within legal limits). Forgetting the sticker window: if you have a plate-mounted sticker, the frame's sticker window must align with the sticker. atroq's design handles this automatically. Mismounting on rear-only states: 22 U.S. states require only a rear plate. Don't waste a frame on a non-existent front plate. See our state guide.
