Pennsylvania License Plate Display Law — 2025 Guide
Pennsylvania requires only a rear license plate.
The Law at a Glance
Recent Changes
PA stopped issuing registration stickers in January 2017. PA requires front plates only for semi-trailer trucks. State-owned vehicles use white-on-blue (or older blue-on-white) plates with PA prefix and 'OFFICIAL USE' legend.
State-Specific Notes
Pennsylvania is a single-plate (rear) state with no plate stickers.
Plate Design Details
ABC1234 — three letters, four digitsLetter Exclusions
I, O, Q, and U are not used at all. A and E are not used as the second letter — thus, MZZ9999 was followed by NBA0001.
Historical Plates Still Valid
Earlier 1999–2004 'www.state.pa.us' plates (ABC-1234) remain valid if retained on current vehicle (cannot be transferred to new vehicle).
Notable Facts
Pennsylvania began using slashed-zero (Ø) on standard plates in May 2025, alongside its new 'Let Freedom Ring' Liberty Bell base. Another unique aspect: PA's number dies are noticeably taller and narrower than the letter dies. PA stopped issuing registration stickers entirely in January 2017.
How atroq Frames Stay Compliant in Pennsylvania
atroq frames in Pennsylvania are engineered to comply with all display requirements. The frame's recessed sticker windows keep renewal stickers visible. The frame's thickness does not obscure the alphanumeric serial, state name, or the issuing jurisdiction. atroq's universal mounting fits Pennsylvania's standard 6 × 12 inch passenger plates. Since Pennsylvania requires only a rear plate, customers typically order single frames.
